11-seed VCU overcomes 19-point deficit to hold off 6-seed UNC in OT, books second-round spot
11th-seeded VCU completed the largest comeback in NCAA Tournament first-round history, erasing a 19-point second-half deficit to defeat 6th-seeded North Carolina 82-78 in overtime. Terrence Hill Jr. hit a stepback 3-pointer with 15 seconds left in OT to seal the victory. The upset ended UNC's season and sent VCU to the second round.
This is why March Madness is the greatest sporting event in America — pure, unpredictable chaos where anything can happen. VCU showed incredible heart and composure to claw back from what looked like certain defeat, making tournament history in the process.
This was a devastating collapse by a team that should have closed out the game with a 19-point cushion. The Tar Heels choked away what should have been a comfortable victory, ending their season in the most painful way possible against a lower seed.
