Ubisoft lays off 105 people at Red Storm, the studio co-founded 30 years ago by Tom Clancy, converts it to a support role
Ubisoft laid off 105 employees at Red Storm Entertainment, the studio co-founded by author Tom Clancy 30 years ago. The North Carolina-based studio, which created the original Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon games, will no longer develop games and instead provide technical support. Red Storm will remain open but only for IT support and engine assistance to other Ubisoft projects.
The closure represents the end of an era for tactical gaming and another example of corporate consolidation destroying creative legacy studios. Red Storm's unique development culture and expertise in military simulation cannot be replicated by reassigning projects to other teams.
Ubisoft faces significant financial pressures and must streamline operations to remain competitive. Converting underperforming studios to support roles maximizes existing infrastructure while reducing costs, allowing resources to focus on more profitable ventures.
