House passes bill that would deport noncitizens for harming police animals
The House passed legislation that would make foreign nationals and non-citizens deportable if convicted of harming law enforcement animals. The bill, called the Bill to Outlaw Wounding of Official Working Animals (BOWWOW Act), would make such individuals inadmissible to the U.S. and subject to removal proceedings.
Law enforcement animals put their lives on the line to protect communities and deserve the same protections as human officers. Anyone who deliberately harms these working animals has demonstrated they pose a threat to public safety and law enforcement operations.
This creates another pathway for deportation that could be applied disproportionately and doesn't address underlying issues. The focus should be on comprehensive immigration reform rather than expanding the list of deportable offenses for non-citizens.
