Afroman prevails in cops' music video defamation suit after a brief but viral trial
Grammy-winning rapper Afroman won a defamation lawsuit filed by seven Ohio sheriff's deputies who raided his home in 2022. The deputies sued for $3.9 million after Afroman used his own home surveillance footage of the raid to create music videos for his album "Lemon Pound Cake." The jury rejected the deputies' claims after a brief trial that gained significant online attention.
The officers claimed Afroman's music videos, which showed their faces and likenesses from his security footage, caused them significant emotional distress and damaged their reputations. They sought $3.9 million in damages for what they characterized as defamatory content that subjected them to public ridicule.
The rapper's legal team argued he had every right to use his own security footage and express his views about the raid through his art. They emphasized that the raid yielded no drugs and that Afroman was simply exercising his First Amendment rights to comment on law enforcement actions at his own property.
